in an effort to get our reader(s) caught up...

background-we are currently in the process of adoption.  we have chosen an agency and program, and been accepted into that program.  we have attended orientation and are now in the process of filling out paperwork and completing a ridiculous check-list.

to that end, one of the questions was to define our faith and spiritual beliefs (and if married, do so jointly).  after some deliberation on how to combine two lives and several denomination into one paragraph, i made a joking suggestion, which we then realized might actually be the best answer we could ever give. here is our response:

"we are currently attending a non-denominational church, were raised in different denominations, and have attended several different denominations since being married.  we believe our spiritual beliefs can most concisely be stated as follows:  i believe in god the father, almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in jesus christ, his only son, our lord.  he was conceived by the holy spirit, born of the virgin mary, suffered under pontius pilot, was crucified, died, and was buried.  he descended into hell and rose again on the third day.  he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father.  he will come again to judge the living and the dead.  i believe in the holy spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting" (amen)
hopefully the case manager will see the humor and truth of our answer.  we debated answering this way because we don't want anyone to think we're being flippant or sarcastic, but in the end, it was the only answer that made any sense.

my pastor growing up had some invaluable advice for the students going off to college, " try out churches.  do not be intimidated or judgmental about different denominations.  however, you need to find someone on staff at the church and ask what their church believes.  if they do not start telling you things that sound remarkably similar to the apostle's creed, run and run fast!" thanks, pastor kevin pound.  i have never ended up at a theologically questionable church because of those words.
